Men’s Health

What is Physical Therapy for Men’s Health?

Men’s Health refers to health issues that are specific to the male anatomy. While there can be many medical reasons for bowel and bladder disorders and pelvic pain syndromes, physical therapists can evaluate and treat the musculoskeletal components.

What we fix:

Bladder Disorders

• Urinary frequency greater than one bathroom trip for every 2 hours awake
• Urgency, hesitancy, retention and/or incomplete emptying
• Nocturia- nighttime urinary frequency: more than one trip to the bathroom during the night
• Pain in the urethra, bladder and/or pelvis; pressure, spasming, or difficulty with initiating urination
• Difficulty with initiation; and/or incontinence (urinary leakage)

Bowel Disorders

• Bowel frequency, urgency, retention, and/or incomplete emptying
• Gas
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Bloating
• Rectal and/or abdominal pain, pressure, or spasm

Pelvic Pain Syndromes

• Chronic pelvic pain
• Low back pain
• Pain and burning sensation when urinating
• Pelvic pain with sitting, but improvement with standing
• Pain in the tailbone
• Pain after bowel movements
• Pain or spasm during or after orgasm
• Post Prostate Cancer treatment

“Research has shown that pelvic floor strengthening can improve sexual function and overcome urinary incontinence.”

How we fix it:

Education

• Muscle Anatomy and Function
• Explanation of Condition
• Bowel and Bladder Training

Manual Therapy

• Myofascial and Soft Tissue Release
• Connective Tissue Manipulation
• Trigger Point Release
• Joint Mobilizations

Exercise

• Individual exercise to increase strength, correct muscle imbalance and increase flexibility
• Postural Training and correcting body mechanics
• Biofeedback

“I never would have guessed that the pelvic floor was the root cause of my urination problems. I didn’t even know what the pelvic floor was…The results are remarkable given the condition I came in with…The professionalism was a 100%, which counts both for putting me at ease/relaxation, as well as minimizing embarrassment.”
