I’m Physically Fit So Why Do I Need Physical Therapy?

I Am Physically Fit, Why Do I need Physical Therapy | Specialized Physical Therapy

It makes sense that injured people need physical therapy, but you may be wondering why you, as a physically fit person, will need physical therapy.  Seems counterintuitive, but if you think about it, if you want to stay uninjured seeing a physical therapist is a smart thing to do.

Have you ever worked with a personal trainer?

A good personal trainer will teach you how to exercise with proper form.  That is important because done wrong, your efforts to be fit and healthy can actually harm you.  Unfortunately, not all trainers know proper body mechanics.  If you work out regularly with fitness tapes or with home equipment, there is no one to check your form.  So how do you prevent injury while working out?

Ask a physical therapist to show you proper body mechanics in everyday activities, as well as in your workout regimen.  A physical therapist is trained to be a movement expert who will use a focus on ergonomics or body mechanic training, fitness, and wellness.

Is my form really okay?

But wait, you think, I’m not in any pain and feel great, so my form must be okay.  That may not be true.  You may still be working out with a few small deficiencies of movement which can become a problem later on.  You could have some small joint limitations or other small injury that doesn’t bother you that is preventing you from getting the most from your workout.  Again, if not addressed early those small issues can become debilitating injuries.  Those injuries can be serious and may not be easily treated.

Be proactive

So being proactive and asking for help before you are in pain or injured is a really smart thing to do.  That proactive outlook is a part of what physical therapy is all about.  Be smart, do your fitness routine right and stay healthy longer.
