Summertime Tips For Running With Your Dog

Summertime Tips For Running With Your Dog

Exercising with your dog is a fantastic way to keep both of you in great shape. Running burns a lot of calories and dogs love it. In the summer there are some things you should do to protect your best friend when running.

First, if you haven’t gone running with Fido, remember that like people, dogs need to work up to a marathon. Start with a combination of running and walking for a short time to give him time to build up his endurance. As with people, dogs can be susceptible to stress fractures and heat stroke. Start slow.

Remember that puppies, like children, are still growing. Your puppy’s growth plates are not fully formed until 18 months old, so check with your vet before running with your dog.

Keep the weather in mind. Summer can be very hot and humid. Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat. They can overheat very quickly and cause heat stroke. If the temps are high, run early or late. If there is a pond, lake or beach close by consider running there where Fido can take a plunge to cool off as well.

Don’t forget his paws! Pavement and asphalt get incredibly hot on summer days and can quickly burn your dog’s feet. Gravel can tear paw pads. Dirt, grass or sand are best. Try the park or beach.

Be sure you are visible to traffic. If it’s dark out wear reflective gear and put some on your pup. Find a leash and collar with reflective qualities.

Be sure to bring water… for both of you. Get your dog to drink before going out to run. Be sure to stop and share your water while running too. Also remember that dogs can get sunburned too. If your dog has shorter hair or are a lighter color, put some sunblock on them.

One caution before and after running: Some dogs are susceptible to bloat and eating too close to exercising can be extremely dangerous.
