What is the Vestibular System and Vestibular Rehabilitation?
The vestibular system is a sensory system in the inner ear that providers the brain with information about balance, motion, and spatial orientation.
Impairments of the vestibular system can lead to symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, dysequilibrium, and balance problems.
Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy that helps reduce to eliminate dizziness and balance issues. A physical therapist will tailor vestibular rehabilitation therapy to the patient’s specific impairments and deficits.
What we can treat:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Vestibular hypofunction from a neuritis or labyrinthitis
- Vestibular Migraine
- Cervicogenic Dizziness
- Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
- Dysequilibrium and balance issues
- Dizziness due to a concussion
Migraines affect 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males. 25% of individuals with migraine will experience vertigo as an aura with or without headache.
How we can treat it:
Canalith Repositioning:
- A series of head and body movements to help return calcium carbonate crystals to their correct location in the vestibular system
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy:
- A systematic progression of exercise protocols which may include gaze stabilization and balance exercises
Manual Therapy for Cervical Spine:
- Techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and dry needling to address cervical components of dizziness.
