Are your headaches treatable? The type of treatment for your headaches depends on the type of headache. Some types of headaches include tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, sinus headaches and hormone headaches.
Which Headaches Are Treatable with Physical Therapy?
The tension headache can be treated by physical therapy. Tension headaches originate from the neck and get their name from the tight or tensed muscles of the neck.
Many people are walking around with tension headaches and believe they have migraines. There were many examples of this in our clinic this year.
Let me give you an example. I am treating the spouse of a headache sufferer. The question during the session while I work on this person’s spouse is “Do you treat migraines?” My answer is that there is not much we can do for migraines, but if your migraines are triggered by tension headaches, maybe we can help.
Treatment for this individual was directed to try and reduce the frequency of the headaches. The treatment included dry needing of the myofascial trigger points, hands on treatment of the neck and posture exercises. Quickly, we saw the headaches decrease and then dissipate over about 6 visits.
The reason we were so effective at treating these “migraines’ is they were not migraines at all. A migraine is a vascular headache, and this was not. This was a good, old-fashioned tension headache improperly labeled as a migraine due to the intensity of the headache.
Headaches are categorized not by their intensity, but by the symptoms and the cause of the headache. We are very successful at treating acute and chronic headache symptoms. Additionally, the use of dry needling has been an effective addition to the treatment of tension headaches, when all other treatments have failed.
If you have headaches, give us a call and we can evaluate weather our treatments can help you.
What is Trigger Point Dry Needling? Trigger points are the painful spots in a muscle which, when pressed upon, will send pain to a different area of the body. This referred pain is what can be relieved with Trigger Point Dry Needling. The process involves using small dry needles similar to those used in acupuncture. The needle is placed into the trigger point to release the tight muscles, increase blood flow and alleviate muscle banding and pain. A low risk alternative to traditional injection, Trigger Point Dry Needling relies on the body’s own healing mechanisms to eliminate pain.
